Status of perishable and durable samples tested at the Pesticide Residue and Mycotoxin Unit of the Food Storage and Prevention of Infestation Division from March 2008 – August 2009 READ

News

For the month of March 2009, the Pesticide Residue and Mycotoxin Unit received forty-one samples for testing.

Mrs. Tamara Moore, the Senior Food Storage Scientist in the unit, travelled to Chile from March 30 to April 3 where she was the only representative from Jamaica at the first coordination meeting of “Implementing a Diagnosis System to Assess the Impact of Pesticide Contamination in Food and Environmental Compartments at a Catchment Scale in the Latin American and the Caribbean (LAR) Region”. This meeting fell under the auspices of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) – under project number RLA/5/053.

This laboratory has the responsibility of ensuring that foods and feeds do not contain pesticide, other chemical residues and mycotoxins above acceptable levels.

Services Offered:

1. Chemical, pesticide and/or mycotoxin analyses of a wide variety of commodities including:
a) canned products, fish, poultry, soups and shellfish;
b) processed foods (e.g. cheese, pastry, noodles, cream-filled cakes);
c) powdered milk and milk products;
d) boxed and canned juices and drinks:
e) raw materials used in food processing;
f) animal and pet feed;
g) spices, condiments and agricultural produce (e.g. pimento, ginger, cocoa beans, turmeric);
h) fruits and vegetables;
i) durable commodities e.g. rice, corn, flour;
j) damaged/contaminated cargo re providing certificates to insurance companies;
k) water.
