Proper sanitation is probably the most important aspect of any pest prevention or control programme. Sanitation robs pests such as flies, cockroaches, rodents and ants of the food they need to survive. Keep all areas such as counter tops, sinks, floors, cupboards and machinery free of food scraps and spilled liquids. Keep food in secure containers and store durable commodities such as rice in the refrigerator if being kept for long periods. Ensure that garbage cans are properly covered and emptied frequently. Regular inspection and proofing i.e. blocking areas for pest entry, must be included in any pest control programme.
2-b A fumigant is a toxic chemical used in the gaseous state in to kill or control a target organism. Fumigants must usually be used in a sealed area at the proper concentrations and time periods in order to be effective. Fumigants must only be used by trained persons. The only two fumigants approved for use in Jamaica are methyl bromide and phosphine.

4-a Mycotoxins are toxic chemicals produced by certain species of fungi. If contaminated food is consumed, these toxins can lead to illnesses such as cancers, birth defects and inflammation of the digestive tract in humans. In livestock, mycotoxins can cause lowering of meat or milk production, increased susceptibility to infections and difficulties in reproduction.
5-d Insects belong to the phylum Arthropoda, class Insecta. About one million different species of insects have been described and entomologists believe that there may be millions that a yet to be discovered. Most insects are not harmful to man. Some, however, such as certain species of cockroaches, flies and ants infest homes, food and food areas and can also be vectors of disease. Some beetle species infest stored food and agricultural crops. Note that spiders and mites are not insects.

1-b A stored product pest is an insect (or a mite) that lives, reproduces and feeds on and in durable stored commodities such as rice, corn, flour, spices, tobacco and lumber. e.g. the rice weevil (Sitophilus oryzae) the rust-red flour beetle (Tribolium castaneum) and tropical warehouse moths (Ephestia spp.). Stored product pests can cause great loss in food quality and quantity. The larval stage of the insect usually does the most damage
2-a Squirrels and beavers are rodents but are not found in Jamaica while mongooses and bats are not rodents. Coneys are protected species and must not be harmed. A rodent is a mammal which has large, strong incisors, no canine teeth and a space (diastema) between the incisors and molar teeth. Rodents belong to the order Rodentia which means "to gnaw".
3-d Cockroaches, rats, mice and flies are capable of spreading disease because of their filthy habits. This is one important reason why infestation must be controlled
9-b Minimally processed/fresh cut/lightly processed fruits and vegetables are prepared by a single or any number of the appropriate unit operations such as peeling, slicing, shredding, juicing, coring, chopping that do not affect the "fresh-like quality" of the fruit or vegetable (Burns, 1995). It differs from traditional processing as the tissues remain viable or fresh during handling and the tissue's behaviour is typical of that observed in plant tissues that have been wounded or exposed to stress conditions (Brecht, 1995)
10-a Stacks of food in containers must be stored at least two feet away from walls, four feet away from ceilings and (stacks of food in containers which are not waterproof) four inches off the floor.
